important of fingerprints
One of the most important uses for fingerprints is to help investigators link one crime scene to another involving the same person. Fingerprint identification also helps investigators to track a criminal's record, their previous arrests and convictions, to aid in sentencing, probation, parole and pardoning decisions.
Fingerprints are important for many reasons, including:
Identification
Fingerprints are a strong method of identification because no two people have the same fingerprints, even identical twins. They are also durable and difficult to alter over a person's life.
Criminal investigations
Fingerprints can be used to identify suspects, link crime scenes, and confirm or disprove a person's identity.
Identifying victims
Fingerprints can be used to identify victims of disasters or those who are deceased or incapacitated.
Background checks
Fingerprints can be used for background checks for government employment, defense security clearance, and concealed weapon permits.
Biometric security
Fingerprints can be used to control access to secure areas or systems.
Workforce management
Fingerprints can be used in time and attendance systems to reduce payroll inflation and employee time theft.
Fingerprints are classified by their patterns, which fall into three basic types: loops, whorls, and arches
Loops
These patterns have a curved path that hooks inward or outward at both ends. Loops are further classified as radial or ulnar, depending on which side of the hand the tail points toward. Ulnar loops start on the pinky side of the finger, while radial loops start on the thumb side.
Whorls
These patterns are usually circular or spiral in shape, with one or two ridges that extend farther out than the rest. Whorls can be further classified into sub-groups, such as plain whorls, accidental whorls, double loop whorls, and more.
Arches
These patterns are the rarest type, with a single ridge that curves downward or upward and connects at the bottom. Arches can be further classified into plain arches or tented arches, which have a spike-like or steeple-like appearance in the center.
